SWMS review checklist: what a safe work method statement must contain
Use this checklist to review a SWMS, then paste yours into the checker to see which items it finds. In the model WHS Regulations (NSW, Queensland, WA, SA and others) a SWMS must:
- identify the work that is high risk construction work (r299(2)(a); the 18 categories are in r291);
- state the hazards and the risks to health and safety they cause (r299(2)(b));
- describe the control measures (r299(2)(c));
- describe how controls are implemented, monitored and reviewed (r299(2)(d));
- take account of circumstances at the workplace and, on a construction project, the WHS management plan (r299(3)(a));
- be readable and understandable to the people who use it (r299(3)(b)).
Also: work stops if the SWMS is not followed (r300), a copy goes to the principal contractor (r301), it is reviewed when controls change (r302) and kept until the work is done (r303). Victoria is different: see the Victorian page.
A checklist, not advice. This tool looks for words in the text you paste and lists which content rules it finds. It cannot judge whether your controls are safe or whether your SWMS meets the law. It is not legal or safety advice. Check your state regulator's guidance before you rely on any SWMS. Your text stays in your browser and is not sent anywhere.
